Remember arcades? Unless you were born in the 80's or early 90's the chances are you do not. they were the greatest places to be. The only time you knew of a new game is by hearing these crazy rumors or being lucky enough to go play yourself. i can remember waiting in line at Rack N Roll for almost an hour with 4 quarters until I was in line to lose my money as quickly as I could put it in the machine. the games were great: Street Fighter, Tekken, Killer Instinct and Mortal Kombat.
MK was great because it was the game you weren't supposed to play but everyone did. It was bloody, scary and addictive. the only thing better than playing at the arcade was when you read in your GamePro that they were developing a console version of the game you could play on your Genesis or SNES (everyone knows the Genesis version was better because it had the blood) I lost many hours of sleep trying to master the fatalities but ended up usually uppercutting the dazed opponent instead.
Over the years, the game is still beloved and played buy millions, all awaiting the next good MK game. the best game to date is Mortal Kombat 2, no questions asked. there were a few standouts since then but nothing as good as the second game. Next week (Apr. 19) we see a whole new game, "Mortal Kombat" which has been overhauled and offers the same famous characters and new stages, fatalities and bone breaking "X-ray" scenes. I have played the demo and it is AMAZING! The Unreal engine they have used for game design is flawless and everything is crisp and clear. I am waiting patiently for the full release to again lose sleep and hopefully master some fatalities this time around.
